DO40 and The Actors’ Fund
DO40 met with Tamar Shapiro, Managing Director of Social Services for The Actors’ Fund. She encouraged our members to use the many resources of the organization, some of which you will find below. Please go to www.actorsfund.org for more information.
The Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic The clinic, located at the Aurora Residence, 475 West 57 th Street (at 10 th Avenue ), provides free health care to uninsured and underinsured entertainment profes-sionals in the NYC area. The clinic offers healthcare, health screenings and patient education. Lab testing ordered by the doctors at the clinic is free to uninsured patients. The clinic is open five days a week and has a full-time physician on staff, volunteer doctors offering primary care and a variety of specialty services. The Health Insurance Resource CenterThis is a comprehensive health insurance information and referral service. The AHIRC database (www.ahirc.org) includes an extensive list of insurers, government programs and associations that offer quality affordable health insurance to artists and the self-employed, as well as healthcare access information for the uninsured. Individuals may also receive health insurance advice and counseling through The Actors’ Fund. Contact the Health Insurance Resource Center at 212-221-7300 x 265.
The Entertainment Industry This program addresses the needs of the working professional. The program provides counseling on a broad range of life transitions, family and work issues, as well as advocacy and referral to housing, legal, child care and health services. Emergency financial assistance is provided for basic living and health expenses, and seminars are offered on budgeting, debt management, investments, taxes, estate planning and securing affordable housing. There are many more resources available to DO40 members, e.g., the Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, The Actors’ Fund AIDS Initiative, the Actors’ Work Program and the Disabled Care Program.
