Another wonderful night of theater and dance memories October 16, 2019 at St. Luke’s Theater, with over 25 panelists and performers on stage to celebrate 50/100 as we’ve been calling it (just to shorten the title!).

DO40 board member Katharine Buffaloe-Harris (and moderator) assembled her castmates from the 1981 Broadway cast of JOSEPH, plus technical and creative team members (and even a London West End cast member), and wove a wonderful first act of panelists and performers, headed by the original Joseph, Bill Hutton, and Narrator from the 90’s revival, Kelli Rabke.  Also on hand, Phillip Arran (London cast) Lorraine Barrett, Philip Carrubba, Corothy Tancredi Dybisz, David Friedman, Stephen Hope, Jonni Masella, Gordon Stanley, Barry Tarallo and Marti Silvestri.  The cast performed two ensemble numbers and Bill and Kelli shined in their solos as well.  The history of the show was plotted out, how it came to be and how it came to Broadway – direct from the creative team, tech people and performers – a rarity for all to be on the stage at the same time!  As we say, you don’t get all this information in books!  Only at a DO40 event!

MARGE CHAMPION BIRTHDAY CAKE with Katharine Buffaloe-Harris, Phillip Arran, Richard Skipper,
Larry Fuller, Ernestine Jackson, DO40 President John Sefakis, John Canemaker, Norton Owen,
Mindy Aloff, Rex Reed and John Gilvey

Act I was DO40’s love letter to Advisory Board member Marge Champion, with moderator Richard Skipper at the helm, and panelists Mindy Aloff, Emmy winner John Canemaker, Advisory Board member Larry Fuller, Gower Champion biographer John Anthony Gilvey, Norton Owen from Jacob’s Pillow, and THE Rex Reed, who has known Marge since he was 14!  Also on hand to sing “Someone to watch over Me,” acclaimed singer and actress Ernestine Jackson.  (Marge sang the song in her 1955 movie, Three for the Show.)

Everyone assembled for a Marge Happy Birthday song Finale, which included a great cake with Marge’s photo in the center (the cake was delicious, but no one could bring themselves to eat THAT portion!).

JOSEPH Cast

Kudos to Musical Director Steve Webber for assembling the music and rehearsing the cast, all the performers who gave their time and effort to appear, and especially to our moderators, Katharine Buffaloe-Harris and Richard Skipper.  This was a DO40 first!  Two entirely different theater and dance anniversaries celebrated at the same time. Thanks to all the volunteers and DO40 members who made this possible.  And bravo to the audience, who came despite howling winds and torrential rain!

A very happy and belated birthday (Sept 2, 1919) to Marge Champion from all of us at DO40!   Marge is now living in Los Angeles, close to her son, Gregg.  She will be receiving a DVD of this evening – soon!
